It’s only half true.
Anyone can generate something that looks designed. Very few people can actually design.
Here’s the clear difference between an experienced designer who uses AI and a non-experienced person who relies only on AI.
Experienced Designer + AI
- Starts with clear intention and strategy before opening any AI tool
- Understands fundamental design principles and applies them consciously
- Uses AI to explore variations and speed up early ideation
- Critically evaluates every output instead of accepting the first “nice” result
- Knows how to refine, correct proportions, fix hierarchy, improve readability, and strengthen emotional impact
- Maintains consistency across a brand or project
- Considers technical requirements (print production, web performance, accessibility, file formats)
- Can explain why a design works or doesn’t work
- Treats AI as a highly capable assistant, not the decision-maker
Result: Faster process, higher quality, more original and purposeful work.
Non-Experienced Person + Only AI
- Begins with a prompt and hopes for the best
- Receives visually attractive images that often lack structure or purpose
- Cannot identify fundamental problems (poor hierarchy, weak contrast, awkward spacing, unclear focal point)
- Keeps regenerating instead of refining with intention
- Produces work that frequently looks generic or “AI-flavoured”
- Misses practical and strategic considerations (audience, context, brand fit, production needs)
- Has limited ability to iterate beyond surface-level changes
- Relies on the tool’s taste rather than developing their own
Result: Fast output that often fails when real-world requirements appear.
The Core Truth
AI is an amplifier.
It multiplies the skill, taste, and judgment of the person using it.
When an experienced designer uses AI, the output carries years of trained intuition, problem-solving ability, and visual decision-making. When someone with no design foundation uses only AI, the output usually reflects the limitations of the prompt and the model’s average aesthetic.
One approach produces design. The other produces decoration that sometimes looks like design.
The difference is not the tool. The difference is the mind guiding the tool.
